Early on in the aftermath of his disastrous Thursday debate performance, one of the many dominoes President Joe Biden’s handlers worked to prevent from falling was one related to questions about how he is during a normal workday. I mean, if he couldn’t rise to the occasion for a debate, how did/does he function in handling day-to-day business, the rough and tumble of Capitol Hill?

We got our answer in the form of an Axios report titled “The Two Bidens,” where unnamed aides informed the American people not to worry, that Biden was “dependably engaged” during the hours of 10 am – 4 pm, or when he wasn’t traveling internationally. But outside of that narrow coherency window, we could sometimes expect the lost and out-of-it Biden we saw Thursday night to do his thing.

In other words, if a world leader decides to launch an attack against the United States outside of those hours, we are screwed.

We’re screwed anyway, of course, as long as Biden is in office, but on Tuesday we had a troubling update from the New York Times on that 10-4 timeframe, which in effect raises even more questions about just how “engaged” he is (or is not) on any given day of the week (bolded emphasis added):

In the 23 days leading up to the debate against former President Donald J. Trump, Mr. Biden jetted across the Atlantic Ocean twice for meetings with foreign leaders and then flew from Italy to California for a splashy fund-raiser, maintaining a grueling pace that exhausted even much younger aides.

Mr. Biden was drained enough from the back-to-back trips to Europe that his team cut his planned debate preparation by two days so he could rest at his house in Rehoboth Beach, Del., before joining advisers at Camp David for rehearsals. The preparations, which took place over six days, never started before 11 a.m. and Mr. Biden was given time for an afternoon nap each day, according to a person familiar with the process.

So he had two days rest at his beach home before debate prep started and he still needed daily naps in between debate prep sessions? Keep in mind that Biden often travels home for the weekend to rest, so this new information should prompt people to consider whether or not he’s having midday naps at the White House after those restful trips, too.

My guess is that there is a high probability that’s happening, especially considering all the times his daily schedule has been light with the afternoons being especially light.  Case in point:

So, let us break this down. According to White House staffers, Biden’s with it during the hours of 10-4. But presumably, at least an hour of that is lunch, and let’s guess naptime is an hour. That leaves four hours where Biden, the leader of the free world, is “dependably engaged.”

The lights are on and Biden is home… napping. Sounds about right.
